So, this evening for dinner, we had some healthy burritos. Baby blue (Aliyah, she has blue eyes) likes to eat her burrito sans the tortilla, so she had burrito insides for dinner and also, yes, you guessed it... peas! As we were finishing our plates, my husband and I got caught up in... conversation... just conversation ;-) Baby blue likes to amuse herself and sometimes at the expense of her food. This evening she did that very well. I looked over and what I saw prompted me to say, "Honey, we don't pick our nose, No thank you." At the same time my husband looked over and what he saw prompted him to say, "Take the peas out of your nose, please!" I laughed. What?? I didn't think she had peas in her nose, I just thought she found something else up there that was amusing her at the moment... but it seems that she PUT something up there to amuse herself. Was my husband really more observant of that fact?? I guess so, because as I stepped over to her chair to find out what was going on (because, really I didn't believe him), I found a pea up her nostril and it looked like she was digging at it.
Ok, the rest of the story is only for those who are not faint of heart and want to know all the gross, gory details...
So I knew that my finger wouldn't get it out, it would probably just push it up there further, so I squeezed at the top (bridge) of her nose hoping to squeeze it out. Well, I did squeeze something, because the part of the pea that was showing popped and pea innards splashed out! Ewwww, yes, that was my reaction, "EWWWW!" I will say that it worked out fine though because I was now able to grab the pea skin with my nails and successfully pulled it out!! Yay, I was the hero!!!
Or so I thought...
This part of the story gets a little fuzzy... I don't actually remember what made me check her other nostril, because on first glance I thought there was only one pea in one nostril. But whatever made me check was a good thing, because there was one lonely, lost pea lodged quite far up baby blue's nasal cavity. My first thought was tweasers, but I knew I couldn't get it up her small nostril... hmmm... what to do. She kept wanting to pick at it, but it was pushing it farther up. So, my husband ran upstairs to grab our suction bulb (you know that little thing to clean out baby's noses). We were hoping that since it would suck out snot and buggers, it might just work on a pea! Up until this time, baby blue had been happily the center of attention, but for some reason didn't like how the evening was turning when we held her down in what looked to be an attempt at surgery.
Needless to say, the suction bulb failed us miserably and I'm pretty sure the pea was even further away from rescue, at this point it was barely visible... even when you got baby blue laid down and peered straight up her nose.
I decided to call her doctor. (Oh, on a side note, I have actually been laughing almost this whole time at the situation, which wasn't as funny to my husband... especially when I picked up the phone to call the doctor... he really didn't want it to come to that.)
Anyway, I called the doc:
Me: "Hi, this is Aliyah's mom and I'm sorry to bug you on a Saturday evening, but Aliyah has a pea lodged pretty high up in her nose."
Doc: "Oh, no."
Me: Thinking; yeah that's why I'm calling you!
Me: "Do you have any ideas to get it out?"
Doc: "I'd be happy to meet you at the office, but I'm afraid I'm just stepping into an important dinner, if I had known an hour ago.... you'll probably have to take her to emergency... I'm sorry"
Me: Thinking; did he really say an hour ago? Does he really think that I just let my daughter run around for over an hour playing with a pea up her nose?!
Me: "Ok, no problem, I understand, thank you."
So, at this point I was laughing harder at the situation and the thought of us in the emergency room filling out paperwork for a toddler with a pea lodged in her nasal cavity.
Again, my husband wasn't fond of this thought... for two reasons. One being that he thought it would be embarrasing going to the emergency room for that, even though I reasurred him that it happens all the time. The second reason being that he didn't want to sit there for hours, since baby blue was a non-emergency, anyone that had a more serious issue would be admitted before her.
For the next several minutes we became cheerleaders for my daughters nose-blowing abilities. "Aliyah, blow your nose really hard! Come on, baby you can do it! Ok, good one, do it again! Yay, that's great. Keep blowing your nose!" Yes, that's what you would've heard if you stepped into our living room at that time. We knew if this didn't work we'd be walking into the hospital with our heads down in shame.
After about 5 minutes (what seemed to be days) of nose blowing, I felt something bounce onto my foot and roll under the couch. Was that it!! Was it the pea!! We looked around frantically like we'd just dropped a diamond in the middle of Times Square. Yes, we found the pea!!! What relief, (r-o-l-a-i-d-s!!, did that just come into your mind too?? I'm aging myself) sweet relief!!
Now, Aliyah is fine, tucked into bed and sleeping like a baby. (Where did the term, 'sleeping like a baby' come from though anyway? When baby blue was a baby, she didn't sleep all that well, and neither did I!!) All the peas are cleaned up, and I've vowed to watch her better when she's eating peas. We also had a nice, long discussion about NOT sticking objects up your nose!

Yay!!! I'm so excited that your blogging! This is soo great Tab!! Wonderful photos, thoughts and articles. Keep sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove the breakfast.. looks tempting...
could even be an easy 'outdoor tray'
Love you - looking for more!
So I laughed the whole time that I read this. Aren't children such a joy? You learn al sorts of new and exciting things from them. Who knew that the highlight of your evening would be getting a pea to come out?
ReplyDeleteHere is my funny story
http://thedogsaboytoo.blogspot.com/2008/01/so-i-got-mom-of-year-award-for-this-one.html
About the baby's adventer with batteries... and the toddlers fun time with markers....
Heh - great story! Glad you didn't have to go to emergency... because you just KNOW you'd be sitting there for three hours and she'd manage to blow the pea out of her nose two minutes before they finally called you in.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your SITS day.
lol Super cute!! Our adventure came when our oldest somehow smashed banana into her ear. Really...not fun!
ReplyDeleteHave an amazing Wednesday - From a SITSta!
Oh no! Sort-of funny, sort-of NOT! Sometimes you just wish you could induce a really big sneeze and then at the crucial moment, just press their their other nostril shut. But it's not that easy.
ReplyDeleteOh! I am so hoping my 3yo never does this... she's a bit of an experimenter. the only real disaster is her shaking talc powder into her open mouth as a baby- luckily she never breathed it in.. but it was a big scare!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you're laughing as all this is going on.
ReplyDeleteI used to WEAR a lot of peas when I was little. No kids of my own though so no "fun" food stories.
ReplyDeleteI guess this is what i have to look forward to!
ReplyDeleteI have been soooo fortunate that Stink has not shoved peas (or any other food) up his nose. At just over two years, my husband and I are very aware of the likelyhood that once he truly discovers how "funny" it can be, he will be doing it quite often. We are keeping ourselves prepared and always on gaurd!
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to get the pea out!
You really dealt with the situation well I admire that. I am sure I would have been a lunatic about the whole thing. This is a great story, my son loves peas too and his grandmother hates them!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh, that is hillarious. I'm very glad to hear it worked out o.k. in the long run.
ReplyDeleteOMG!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what I would have done in that situation. Knock on wood my girlies haven't put stuff up their noses.
However, I have a friend (and her hubby is a doctor- very convenient!) and their daughter DID put a bead up her nose. It was so far up they actually had to go in (I think they might have sedated her too). Oh boy. That sounded like an ordeal!
My oldest loved eating ladybugs when she was under a year. Especially dead ones. EEEWWWwwwww!
Holy cow! I have heard of this happening! So glad it worked out!
ReplyDeleteSomehow we sidestepped anything up the nose through our three kids!
ReplyDeleteLol, love the Dr's answer about knowing an hour ago!
ReplyDeleteOh no! At least the pea came out without having to be surgically removed!
ReplyDeleteI have to say, we never had any nose issues when my kids were young.
ReplyDeleteThank God ... because the inside of anyone's nose is just not where I want to be.
Glad she made it through OK!
Wow. What a funny story and thank goodness she didn't get hurt. I have a little funny story. I don't remember my daughter's age but she was very young and had just started talking. My ex-wife and I decided we would venture out to a nice restaurant and take Heather with us. We were both about 20 and decided to get all dressed up for dinner. So here we are in a fancy restaurant, all dolled up with Heather in her high chair. It's relatively quiet with soft conversation around us when all of a sudden Heather announces very loudly, "I farted!" The whole room stops talking, looks at us, and for a second I thought I would die! Then everyone started laughing and then so did Heather and then so did we. So an embarrassment turned into a "cute baby" moment. Oh, and Happy SITS Day!
ReplyDeleteI loved this! I would have been totally freaking out. So glad everything worked out okay!
ReplyDeleteOh my, the things kids do! Luckily, I don't have any of these stories yet. Yet. I'm sure they're coming :)
ReplyDeleteOh, that was hilarious! Thankfully, none of my girls have ever attempted anything like that.
ReplyDeleteToo funny!!! We haven't experienced this yet with our 19 month old, thank goodness!
ReplyDeleteMy cousin did push a green bean so far up her nose when she was little that she had to have surgery to remove it. Really can't believe that is possible.
Too funny!
ReplyDeleteYour situation went so much better than ours when my son swallowed a plum pit!
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious...Growing up I was prone to sticking things up my nose too. I'll admit it! So funny what kids do.
ReplyDeleteI have 3 boys. The things they have shoved into their ears, noses, mouths, is ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you got her to blow her nose!!!
You had me squirming there for a minute! Thank god you didn't have to go to the emergency room.
ReplyDeleteAnd she entertains herself while you eat? So lucky, what is that like?
Lol, kids do the darnest things! I'm glad you have the sense of humor to get through it.:D
ReplyDeleteToo TOO funny!
ReplyDeleteHere from SITS.
Good to know! Now we'll be prepared if Evie ever does the same...glad you didn't have to go to the ER, that WOULD have been embarrassing! :)
ReplyDeleteSits:
ReplyDeleteI can't stop laughing.
That is funny and scarry at the same time:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a potentially horrifying scenario, but funny at the same time. None of my kids have ever lodged anything up their noses, YET...my baby is less than two weeks from being 3 and I guess there's still time. *knock on wood*
ReplyDeleteHmm.. I have to agree with Vickie here, funny AND scary!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't yet had any things-up-the-nose incidents, but I am always hearing horror stories about it.. I'm hoping maybe we've dodged a bullet on this one by now! lol
HAPPY SITS day!
My 2 year old just put dried apple bits up her nose, not fun, but funny inretrospect!
ReplyDeleteHow Funny!!! What is it with kids and sticking stuff up their noses?!
ReplyDeleteFunny and good to know how to get peas out of a baby nose.
ReplyDeletelol...sry had to laugh at that one, congrats on being the fb for sits!!
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious! haha! Thank goodness you kept your sense of humor during the whole ordeal. :)
ReplyDeletelol!!! hillarious! :) i can visualize the entire event! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's too stinking funny! Glad everything came out ok!
ReplyDelete*happy SITS day!
I think this is some sort of right of passage for children.
ReplyDeleteHilarious! So glad you got it out! :)
ReplyDeleteThe thought of you cheering on her nose-blowing is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteGotta mind those P's and Q's.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I'm so glad I haven't had to go through this yet...knock on wood : )
ReplyDeletehahaha so far i havent had this issue with my 4 but they have done plenty of other things to make up for it. lol
ReplyDeleteOMG, I've been there with my middle girly! She has stuck corn up here nose and even a cashew once on the way home from church (while in the car). She was older too, so we could use tweezers to get it out, but at one point I thought we'd be visiting the ER too...no fun! Glad it all worked out for baby blue, hehe.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story! My little girl will probably start sticking things up her nose pretty soon. Thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeleteThe visuals of all that activity made me giggle!
ReplyDeleteI was on the edge of my seat the entire time!
ReplyDeleteOKay I have a funny story too.
ReplyDeleteWhen my 17 year old was about 5, she broke one of her dress up (bead) necklaces. Whe was playing with the beads and I thought nothing of it...she was a GOOD girl and never got in trouble.
Next thing I know she has them in every hole in her face. One in each ear, one in each nostril. OH MY. I did have to go in to get the ones out of the ears removed.
Soooo funny! I think every baby has tried this trick at least once - with various results. So glad she was able to 'blow' out the pea! ;)
ReplyDeleteBoy, if that isn't an advertisement for smashed peas, I don't know what could be! I'm not looking forward to these days... in fact, I was examining (externally) my own nasal constructions as I read your post just to be sure that I knew exactly what you were talking about. And did your doctor ever say anything about it again? Like why he thought you were just letting her run with a pea in her nose?
ReplyDeleteLOL! This is hilarious! I was cracking up the whole time! Glad you avoided the ER that would probably have been a drag! Great story!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm on of those parents too.. I can't help but laugh when NOBODY else is...
ReplyDeleteMy girls never put things in their noses, luckily. They just stuffed things in air vents, vcrs and the like. Or they ate things they shouldn't. I was tempted to start using fake names when calling poison control! But what a relief to not have to go the doctor.
ReplyDeleteOne time my sister stuck a small stone up her nose, and I screamed bloody murder. Of course, she was older than your little one, but it was a little scary. My mom tried the same trick... "blow your nose". It worked.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, what is it with kids and putting things up there? It seems to be irresistible.
ReplyDeletelol Reminds me of the time that my brother thought he could smell rose petals better if he stuck them up there! I think another brother tried to stick dried beans up there to :P
ReplyDeleteOh this had me rolling! How funny! Your blog is fabulous! I once had a passenger on my plane whose daughter lodged peanuts up her nose. Oh there were big crocodile tears running down her face that day!! I could not help but laugh! I had to hide myself in the lavatory so they wouldn't see me cracking up over their daughter's nasal peril!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got it out!
ReplyDeleteVery funny - I'm glad you kept your sense of humor... My husband would have reacted the same - he had a cousin who stuck something up her nose and, well, it didn't end this well, and now his family is UP-THE-NOSE hysterical... I laughed with you. Happy SITS day!!!
ReplyDeleteYour lucky, I'be been into the ER a few times now for objects-up-the nose.
ReplyDeleteLOL - what a classic! This will be the story you tell her at family dinners when she is 25.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! Glad everything came out okay!
ReplyDeleteAfter this I think I'm with Baby Blue's grandfather on peas. How could you ever eat them again after that?
ReplyDeleteI knew there was a reason why I didn't like peas. I can't stand them. Will pick them out of whatever food they are "blended" with...ewww...
ReplyDeleteOh dear, that made me cringe...and think of the story when my cousin was little and had to go to the ER because she stuck buttons up her nose.
ReplyDeleteThat will be a memory that stays around forever. We have one of our 13-year-old when she was only 3. She always took her nap with a specific afghan from the couch that had [what do you call them??] 'fringe' on the ends. She got up during her nap and pointed up her nose and told me 'there was something there..' After some frantic questioning, we figured out what it was but couldn't get it out. Our pediatrician had to meet us at the office after hours and used some special very-long tweezers to pull it out. It was wadded up but once stretched was about 5 inches long! I was so embarrassed...but it is funny now....
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. I've heard stories of peas and other objects getting stuck in noses, luckily our dd never tried that. However I am predicting our curious son will make an attempt. I've got my eye on him.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of when my now-24-year-old daughter was 10 months old and crawled through the kitchen while I was cleaning up a broken glass. Frantically, I called our pediatrician and tearfully asked her, "How can I tell if Lizzie has eaten glass or not?" Patiently, our pediatrician replied, "Don't worry. You'll know."
ReplyDeleteThat was fun to read. Thanks. Luckily my baby (now 13) never shoved anything...anywhere. I hope he doesn't start now.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day! Enjoy!
If it makes you feel any better, my sister put a thumb tact up her nose once (that did end in an ER visit, but she was completely fine).
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it all ended well.
Ahhh yes! Sadly I have been down the "food-up-the-nose" road before as well. It's awful and we did end up in the ER. UGH!
ReplyDeleteGlad you got it out without needing any extra help.
PS And, yes, I was picturing that old Rolaids commercial ;)
One of my mom's four children was constantly stuffing food items (and a couple of non-food items) up her nose. I will not disclose which one of her children, let's just say this child has grown up totally normal and has not continued this behavior into adulthood. Her husband is grateful.
ReplyDeleteHer grandfather knew there was good reason not to like peas!
ReplyDeletewow-scary stuff!
ReplyDeletemine just stuck a lttle bead up there not too long ago-daddy got her to blow really hard & thank the lord it worked.
OMG! I am so totally the laughing parent around here. Hubby is usually not amused. With me.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to remember the bulb. We haven't had anything lodged in the nose yet, but I did catch Monkey with both his index fingers about 1 1/2 inches up his nose while in the grocery store last week.
It's only a matter of time...
Be glad it was just a pea, and it was her own nose and not yours.
ReplyDeleteI don't like peas, so we don't serve them at our house (since I am the one doing all the cooking) - this just makes me feel justified! Glad she got it out though!!
ReplyDeleteToo Funny!
ReplyDeleteOur little boy likes to put things up his sister's nose.
cute story
ReplyDeleteI feel so lucky ours never put anything up there (YET!).
ReplyDeleteThat sounds familiar. Except the tweezers worked for me. HOWEVER, ours wasn't peas. It was a goji berry. Apparently when we talked about not putting peas in our nose, we were *too* specific. Now we know NOTHING goes in our nose. Good luck! I am impressed at the nose blowing though... that is a skill we haven't exactly developed yet.
