A Berry Blue Day.

Photobucket
A Blue-berry day! Ha. It was a very blue blueberry day... picking lots and lots of blueberries. Me, Hubby, Baby Blue, Papa, Nana and one cousin.
Baby Blue picked ALOT,
but most never made it to the bucket. They made a pit stop in her mouth, and never came out,
thankfully. That would have been a little gross... er, ALOT gross.
I think we'll go back to the farm soon, to get some raspberries.  Baby Blue had so much fun.

She would get
so excited when she picked one.

Photobucket
... then she'd eat it. (notice the hands to her mouth)

Photobucket
Of course, when any almost two year old and 7 foot bushes get together, there is definitely hiding involved. You better believe it.

Photobucket
Add in another little monkey (ie. cousin) and then you'll find a chase.

It was a fun evening to complete a fun day.  Good bye for now!

What's In That Stuff?!?

I recently heard a good question... "Is your shampoo making you fat?" LOL Wow, what a question. Kinda throws you off guard, right? I mean, can I really blame those love handles on my shampoo?? Well, I've been hearing lately from quite a few places... one being my daily tips from Ideal Bite (where that crazy question came from), that 60% of what you put on your skin (including scalp) gets absorbed into your body! So, yeah, if you're shampoo has parabens (linked to weight gain) or other toxic chemicals in it... they are getting into your body. I'm not out to scare anyone, just keeping us health conscious, that's all. I still like my salon shampoo... right now. But there is this cool website, I heard of from another blogger named Marcy, called Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database and you can check the safety of the ingredients in your makeup/hair care/ body care/baby care/etc. I'm in the process of checking out all the 'stuff' we use... especially the products we use on Baby Blue. It's best to shoot for products in the 0-2 range, and alot of ours are definitely above that! It's a little startling, but I think it's good to know what you're putting into your body, and then can make an educated decision on what you buy. Although, I don't put a whole lot of 'weight' into me actually gaining weight from my shampoo... I guess I'll have to use that gym membership I've got ;-)

T.G.I.M.

Thank God It's Monday! Wait... what??
Yeah, you saw it right. Mondays I actually get to stay home (not go to work) with Baby Blue and enjoy some Mommy time with her! That's not to say that I don't work, because it's also the day that I most often clean the house, take care of a large pile of laundry that built up over the last week and busy/fun weekend, and try to organize something in the house ;-)
Baby Blue usually enjoys helping me though... what a great and impressionable time! She enjoys housework with me! Let's keep that going...

Corn on a Stick

Photobucket
Oh, what a yummy day!  A visit to the local Farmer's Market on a perfectly warm and sunny day. After tasting the fresh fruits and veggies... we picked our way along, we enjoyed fresh sweet corn on a stick warm and buttered.  Baby Blue fully enjoyed the rest of my piece and, of course, we had to buy a few to make at home.  Yum!

It Hurts Me Too!

Running across the lawn with the HUGE tree trimmers, laughing loudly entering the new tree fortress... and then suddenly stricken with fear... what happened??

Well, I was about 10 and my brother and I made an awesome fort in the midst of my mother's large evergreen trees.  In order to make this awesome fort though, we had to create a doorway (Now, just to fill you in... I was already extremely domesticated at 10, so this fort was really more of a home. We made steps to enter and found a rug and table to put in the middle.  I actually got a broom and swept all the debris out of our 'area!' ) Well, to create a nice doorway, I got out the tree trimmers and started cutting away, I wanted a nice large arching entrance.  My mother wasn't too excited about this LARGE 'entrance' I'd made to our little fort... so then comes the discipline.  You see, she was all on board for the imagination, making a fort, and even furnishing it, but when it came to cutting out huge parts of her evergreen trees... and without permission especially, that's where she had to draw the line.  And that's when I heard the famous parental quotes... "This hurts me more than it hurts you."  I thought, "Um, ok, how could it, I'm the one getting the sore butt!" (of course, I never, ever said that)

Now, 15 years later (almost), I'm a parent.  And maybe, just maybe, my mother understood a little bit more than I thought she did.  ;-) Love ya mom!

Have you ever had to discipline your child and you really don't want to??? I'm sure, because I never really WANT to, but it is necessary. The hardest part is when you're in public... we've all heard of PDA (Public Display of Affection), but what about Public Display of Aggression? Yeah, if you have children, you've heard of it. LOL Maybe not actually called it that, but you've felt it.

I do have to say, we just went to dinner with some friends last night that we haven't seen in a really long time, and we had Baby Blue with us. Dinner began at what was her normal bedtime and I was a little bit scared... but she was wonderful. She was polite, sat in her chair, ate well, was happy, didn't whine... what a night! I love that! That wonderful night out didn't start there though, we've been disciplining Baby Blue since she could sit up. I know that may sound harsh, but of course discipline is always custom fit to her age and understanding. I think too often we underestimate or don't give our children credit for how smart they really are. Just because they may not be able to articulate everything they'd like to, it doesn't mean they can't understand it. I came across this awesome article on discipline and want to share it with you. The word 'discipline' sometimes can give off a negative connotation, but this article really explains what we as parents should do... and gives it a good light.  Applying good, loving and proper discipline will definitely result in more dinners out with a wonderful little angel beside you!!

Don't forget to read this article!
The "Forgotten" Part of Discipline

"Thank Goodness" Said the Mama.

I just read a book again to Baby Blue and it made me think... Have you ever felt like you nightly routine go's just a little something like the childhood favorite book, "Five Little Monkey's Jumping on the Bed?"  You know, those evening where your precious little monkey's just don't want to go to bed because playing on the bed is just way to much fun instead.  Well, I only have one little monkey, so far, and I sometimes feel like the mama in that book... by the end of the night I want to jump on my bed and say thank goodness! (or rather fall into the bed with lights off because I'm probably already asleep before I hit the pillow)

I remember the evening routine when Baby Blue actually was just that... a baby.  Those times with my little angel so sweet and soft in my arms, falling blissfully asleep.  Now it seems to be just the opposite, I go into the saga expecting my little angel to yawn peacefully and slowly drift off to sleep, but usually end up responding to requests of a different blanket, hug and kiss Dolce (her new kitten), more books.  Or what seems to be Baby Blue's already creative stalling "I love you, Mommy," "Mommy, kiss!"  (Although, those do get me and they are pretty sweet.)

I have begun learning though... yes, I'm a reader.  A great place I found some of the following information is from Parenting Magazine.  And they say that bedtime really begins quite a few hours earlier than you think.  Kids are like wind-up toys.  They need to expend a certain amount of energy before they can really slow down.  So if it's been a particularly relaxing day, or if they've had a late or too-long nap, well, you'd better get rollin' to get that energy expelled and get that precious little toy of yours all wound-down.  Try to get their bodies moving and their minds engaged and they'll be less likely to keep going and going at bedtime.

Of course some of the simplest tricks can sometimes be hard to do, but make your bedtime routine warm and calming (think warm bath, back rubs, book reading, rather than evening gymnastics... yes, even during the Olympics, bedtime is NOT the time to copy the Olympics, although some fun, family games could come out of it... I digress).

Definitely do a sanity check: is it complicated?  If you've got a routine that could fill a scrap book, start scrapping some of those routines.  Keep your eye on the prize: sleep!  Get rid of the routines that call for you getting more water, extra books, saying goodnight to ALL of the stuffed animals and toys, etc.  Begin to cut back, keep it simple.  It'll be easier for everyone involved.

A good 'rule of thumb' that I've found is to get some good 'bedtime' books.  You know, the ones that end with the character in bed and asleep.  These books are more calming and you don't have to get all these exciting loud voices while reading, you can use that soft, sleepy voice to relax the mood.  Also, pick books whose number of sentences per page match your child's age, one for a 1-year-old, two for a 2-year-old, etc.

Evening is a good time to watch the clock.  Bath time by 7:15 so we can be in pj's cuddling by 7:45 and in bed by 8.  Try and resist whatever wants to get you off course at this time... it's precious time with your little monkey!  This way, by 8:05 you can know that, even though you didn't get the laundry done and went off your diet a little, you've met one goal: sleep!

Oh and rarely does it happen, but on the occasion that your little monkey wakes up at night, you'll have the energy to attend to them.  Like Baby Blue did tonight... a couple hours after she went to sleep, she woke up crying, when I went in there she just said, "Mommy, hold you two minutes."  How sweet is that!  I couldn't resist, and did just that, I held her for about 2-3 minutes and then tucked her right back into bed.  Thank goodness said the mama, now I can go to bed!

A Day at the Park

Summer days at the park are just too much fun! All the climbing, laughing, playing... and certainly the pictures!

You know, sometimes, I use the camera as an excuse for not climbing up to the top of a child's playground and crawling through the little tubes that were meant for people HALF my size. But then I realize that the pictures would be so much better if I did that anyway... so I do.

Hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed taking them!

The stickers are from Stuckonyou.biz and work great on just about everything... we've got them on Aliyah's cup and bowls, lunch bag, notebooks, etc. The band is from Inchbug.com and is great on sippy cups, bottles, water bottles. I love labeling things!

6. A great Black and White photo that captures the action or moment.

7.  Apple Computers and various other Apple products.

8.  Napping (ugh, not like it happens often, but when it does... I'm in heaven, sleep heaven)

9.  Blogs.... like reading them, all different kinds... oh, and writing too.

10.  Saturday morning strolls with my family at the Farmer's Market.  Baby Blue loves it too! She gets to try new foods every time we go.  That is one place that she'll actually sit in her stroller.  I love picking out fresh fruits and veggies, sampling them there, and taking home our great finds knowing that they are good for my family and mostly locally grown!

Nap Time!!

Well, today Baby Blue did not seem tired one tiny little bit. She was happy, playful and it was way past her nap time. So, I decided to take her up to her room and rock her in her comfy chair with a bottle (she doesn't usually have a bottle at nap time anymore, just at night). I thought maybe some warm milk and cuddling would make her sleepy, but to no avail. As soon as her bottle was finished, she just starting singing happy songs (made up of noises and words I didn't understand). At that point I decided to try something new. I asked her to look at mommy and she did with a smile. I told her it was nap time and she said 'Uh huh' then I said that she needed to go in her crib now and she nodded and said 'Uh huh' and then I explained that mommy wanted her to take nap in her crib and she said 'Uh huh.' Well, I guess that isn't the new part, I often explain what we're about to do... anyway, then I said that I wanted her to rest, but she could have a book in her crib if she wanted to... she gave me a really excited 'Uh huh!'. I layed her in her crib, gave her a book, her babydoll and a kiss, and stepped out of her room. For the next hour, I would check the monitor and she was just reading to her baby! She played so well and layed in her crib the whole time... and then fell asleep. I had extra time to clean! Yipee ;-)

ABOUT

Welcome to FreshMommy!

I'm Tabitha... Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend, Aunt, Niece, Chef, Laundromat, Teacher, Boo-boo Kisser, Photographer... and I'm sure I've got more titles in there somewhere. And you know what? I love it!

Don't tell anyone.

My favorite 'hats' to wear are being Mommy to two loved little ones, Aliyah, the six year old darling who made me a mama and her vibrant little brother Brayden, our just-turned-three-year-old who's captured our hearts all over again. There's another wee one on the way whom I'm sure will stretch my heart even further and I can't help but love being a wife to Christopher, my very best friend. Oh, yes, and we recently brought a sweet little puppy, Penelope, into our home as well.

Crazy, I know.

We recently moved from home state of Michigan, where we tried to enjoy all the seasons (Fall being one of our favorites) to the much warmer Gulf living of Clearwater, Florida. There's lots of play in our house, lots of pool time in the summer and travel is a big part of our lives. Even with just the four of us, ahem fine... okay almost six of us, chaos in our house is a part of life, and we love it too.

In reality, I do work as a spokesmodel for Mitsubish Motors during the Auto-Show season, so I end up traveling quite a bit. While I'm home, I'm a graphic designer, photographer, heavily involved in my church, and am fervently trying to become domesticated.

This blog, here, is a journey with me of our lives, our travels, and my attempt at domesticity. It all began in June of 2008 at the encouragement of my mother that we should start blogs... I'm still waiting to see hers.

My desire is to inspire others to look at each day as a Fresh New Start, no matter what baggage previous days have brought, joy or sadness, laughter or sorrow, today, right now is a new day to enjoy.  I find that as I look for the beauty of life in the little things, I subsequently find more beauty in each day.

I truly hope you enjoy your time spent here, and I know that if you find yourself inspired it's because of all the creative people surrounding me who are much more amazing that I am.

This blog was born in June of 2008. Though I do have a post dated earlier, from a diary entry I thought I'd share.

- 12,000+ monthly visits
- 500+ daily pageviews
- 150+ facebook "fans"
- 590+ twitter followers

How do you pronounce Aliyah?
Just like the singer, Aaliyah. No, she's not named after her, they just happen to have had the same name. AH-LEE-AH.

Can I use your photos?
Many of many photos have a Creative Commons Licence and are on Flickr. If you'd like to use them for a site or project, and please do so, just please ask permission first. Thank you.

How do you get it all done?
Ha ha. Well, first, I don't. I've written a post for Raspberry Lemonade with tips to help, but like all families, we've got messes and piles and undone lists. It's a part of life.
An important thing to note is that a blog never shows 'all' of a person's life. For me, my blog is about the small, yet big, things in our lives. I try to find the joys, the celebrations and the everyday moments we share together as a family. I want it to be a reminder to me - and perhaps an inspiration - to always cherish the simpler moments of bliss that we have together. It's a way to keep track of memories.
