Later, in the light of day, in that same dark nook, I noticed them. The pile of fluffy sweaters? It was a sweet little huddle of newborn kittens. In my closet. I quickly assigned myself the title of Namer of the Kittens and continued naming them all. All seven of them.
I then proceeded to cry each time one of them was removed from the box we'd decided they'd live in, in the garage, and was placed into another home, another family. I'm not sure how long those kittens lasted in our home, but for me, they we some of my favorite childhood pets.
Now, we have kittens.

Two, in fact. Brothers.

Up until a couple of days before Christmas, we did not have kittens. But by the time we had spent an afternoon holding them, hearing the pleading of a little four year old girl's heart and remembering the feeling of holding a whole four inches of kitten and not being able to keep them all, well, you know.
