A Look Behind the Lens

Have you ever wanted to see what happens behind the scenes when shooting with children?  We recently had our "Love Rocks" photoshoot with my littles, and Chris captured some of the behind the lens moments to share with you!

A couple notes:

- Full bellies = Happy babies
- Music keeps a shoot upbeat and easy.
- Please excuse the white fluffy socks... they were not a part of my outfit, my feet just felt cold and I grabbed the thickest, fluffiest socks I could find.

You can see more of the photos from the shoot here!

Enjoy this little sneak peak into our lives.

Sunday Citar ~ A Work of Art

It's Sunday again that means it's time for one of my favorite things... Sunday Citar!!

Here's where we all share a quote or two... a favorite, a new find, a laugh inducing or tear inducing quote you love this week.

adventure

“A work of art is above all an adventure of the mind”
~Eugene Ionesco

This quote totally tugged at my life is a great big canvas, so throw all the paint you can on it heartstrings. And being ever on the quest of taking what we've been given and fashioning it into it's own masterpiece, I love the idea that it all starts is the mind. We've got ours set to ADVENTURE, and look for it maybe a little too often. This was a scene from today, on our latest excursion, with my eyes glued to the snow covered roads as we headed into a city that can barely be seen beneath the white peaks.  It's the messy moments, the car full, one babe sleeping, the other glued to movie scenes playing out on the iPad, the slick pavement hitting the tires, the leftover Starbucks cup occupying the cup holder and crumbs lining the floor that make life's true works of art. The ones that make you sigh and feel... normal. The unexpected stroke of color that makes life full.

I'd take a messy adventure over put-together inertia any day.

And thank you to all that left the sweetest comments here and here about just that. About making life something beautiful.  I'll be painting my canvas with you in mind today.

The Big One

I stare at the screen through tired eyes, the same story playing itself out like muscle memory after every trip and subsequent return home... start to unpack, laundry, homeschool a lesson on writing letters, give extra kisses and hugs goodnight, trying to catch up on sleep, pick lint from my toes. And except for the last two, muscle memory is winning out, taking me through the motions, all while I fiercely try and find words worthy of my feelings.

I don't even know where to begin.

brayden 12 months

Thoughts swarm around through my head, unorganized and haphazardly, reminiscent of the mess of bags and suitcases still pouring out from the corners of my room where they were flung late Monday night upon my arrival home, as I threw everything out of my arms so I could fully scoop up my littlest little waiting up for mommy's return.  And trying to filter my emotions right now is like trying to sort through the waterfall of clothes and random junk still smelling of the rainy gusts of wind and exhaust of downtown Chicago.

One.

How can something so small, a number so seemingly insignificant, make such an impact and stir up such a whirlwind of feelings?

Since work was keeping me away from home on the actual first anniversary of my littlest's birth, my husband packed up the kids and crossed the 300 miles of pavement separating us so that at the exact moment we scooped up his tiny little body and I held him close to my chest for the very first time, at 1:51 am, I could do it again exactly one year later.  And I did.  I tip-toed my way to his crib tucked into the corner of a dark hotel room and pulled him close as I gently kissed his head.  The scent of it never was sweeter, and I cried.

One.

We celebrated, family style, with a night out on the town, shopping and ducking into one of our favorite Windy City joints for some gourmet mac-n-cheese, french fries and a cake of whipped cream made specially for the birthday boy.  It was perfect.

As the lyrics to Happy Birthday slid from our lips, the memory of that day, the first day of the rest of our lives together, washed over me. It was sweet, and bittersweet.  I'm proud of the boy he is already starting to become, a generous heart already emerging, and yet, that day, his Birth Day, the day so many things almost went wrong, but instead his perfect little cry and nestling his little body in close for his first nursing is something I never want to forget.

One.

The rest of our time together (before daddy had to leave and left big sister with me for a girl's weekend), played out like a wonderfully scored movie, with high notes of the perfect popcorn and elated tones of splashing in the hotel pool to burn off energy before bedtime.  We became lost in the architecture of the city, the tips of the buildings hovering under the clear blue canvas.  The sounds of the taxis and buses, car horns and construction, voices and clippety-clop of shoes productively making their way from here to there all blended into our Brayden's Birthday Celebration soundtrack perfectly, like it was meant to be.  And really, all was as it should be.

There's more to come, because we'll celebrate again. BIG. Because there's no better reason to celebrate than life, than birth, and we like to do it big.  So soon, when we're home for more than just a couple of days at a time we'll do it up Blue Friend and Family style.  Plans are coming along.

One.

And tonight as I rocked my little one-year-old just a little longer because I couldn't bear to part with him yet, succeeding to his crib, I felt it.

I remember those times on a school trip when the bus is filled with an overly annoying song, and we keep singing it over, and over, and over.  And it's stuck in our heads ALL DAY LONG.  Then, when you're supposed to be paying attention to the droning on about the gathering process of wheat, you're actually bobbing your head wearing a crooked smile as you try your best to keep from belting out the lyrics.

My heart feels that way, constantly wearing a big smile and bopping it's head to the beat of my two little ones, far past the end of the bus ride.  And it's a song I never want to end.

Stay tuned...

Fab Finds:: A Dark Little Giveaway

A weekend with the girls. My great friend Briony and my daughter Aliyah, to be specific. A weekend in Chicago with shopping and movies, eating and hotel pool swimming, and cupcakes, lots of cupcakes. A weekend with girls that entails emotions and moods, stories and adventures, tears and laughs. Lots of laughs. And there's always the quintessential girlfriend activity... Sharing. Things we like and love being, tips and tricks being dispensed and exchanged with excited anticipation. One of my favorite new things to share? My sparkly new dark polish scored with the perfect manicure in a kitchy little nail salon of the beaten path in downtown Chicago this past week. And because us girls had a great time, because sharing is so much fun and because I love all my "girls," I've got a bottle of OPI's "My Private Jet" for me... And one for you! Just comment on this post, and I'll choose a winner at random so you can perfectly polish your pretty little paws!

Sunday Citar ~ With Breath, Smiles and Tears

It's already Sunday and that means it's that time again.  Time to share a quote and photo you love.  So, here we go, link up your Sunday Citar today and join the fun!

Citar means "to quote" in Spanish.

The following post is from exactly one year ago, just a few days after I reached out and held a slippery new soul in my hands, one that stretched me and changed me, and has continued to every day of this past year of his life.  Though it's only been a year, I love every part of him and his big sister, the one that made me a mama, with all the breath, smiles and tears, of all of my life.

~Elizabeth Barrett Browning

There was a moment when I went in to give my new little man a kiss. He reached up and grabbed my face.

Love.

The best part, he didn't let go.

Birthday Rendezvous:: A Post by Fresh Daddy

Birthday Boy

Having a wife that travels can be, at times, challenging.  Especially when a new baby is involved.  As a the only parent at home when my wife is on the road, I am forced to be what I can only think of as, "MR. MOM".  I always remember Michael Keeton's 1980's role in "MR. MOM" when my wife gets on a plane.  I wouldn't trade the alone time I get with my children for anything.  It causes me to stretch my communication skills relating with my children and strengthens me personally as I push my boundaries of stress and caring.  I am blessed to HAVE to understand the range of emotions my lovely daughter exudes in those times of wanting her mommy.  Only a father to a little lovely princess could understand the challenges we face... with mom by our side.  Now try it alone for days at a time.  It's a whole different set of challenges.  From playing dolls, to bedtime stories and the challenge of trying to understand the thinking of a grown woman, let alone a woman who is just starting out and has no idea she is experiencing hormones.  I have to laugh at the quickness by which my daughter goes from one feeling or emotion to another.  The mind wobbles...

Like I said... I would not trade it, but challenge equals reward

So today, I find myself blogging in a hotel room set in downtown Chicago.  My wife at work. My one year old (as of yesterday) beside me, napping.  My daughter chilling out to cartoons in the sitting room.  This week's adventure is attributed to my son Brayden's first birthday.  We didn't want Mommy to miss out on this precious anniversary of his birth, so I loaded up the kids and made the drive from Michigan.  Five hours in the car with a 4 year old girl and an almost 1 year old little boy strapped into car seats, the car packed full of supplies for the week.  It was a sight to see.  The trip was, obviously, a success because I am here.  But with a late arrival and excitement of a long overdue reunion with Mommy we all got to bed by about 1am, Michigan time.

Now to the "Piece De Resistance".  Last night was Brayden' s Birthday Dinner.  Excited to walk the streets of Michigan Avenue we set out for Grand Lux Cafe, a local favorite when my wife and I travel here.  Brayden capped off the evening meal with his own personal whipped cream dessert to celebrate his life.  A life we are all overjoyed to celebrate and let him indulge.

Once again the rewards far outweigh the challenge of getting here.

~Chris (Fresh Daddy)

Love Rocks Valentine Printable

It comes around once a year. The holiday marked with love. With overpriced chocolates and funny little cards. In an explosion of red and pink. And yet, in my opinion, the most exciting part of the holiday is the chance to get creative. To make something fun and spread the love.  This year, inspired by my little Rock Stars, we did just that... and it all started with a photo shoot.

Remember that one time I posted about our Valentine's Day  photo shoot and then forgot to share the fun delicious little goodies my kids handed out to their friends? Or at least Aliyah handed them out while Brayden pretty much had no idea what was going on.

Well, here's an idea to save in the bookmarks folder for next year, because this personalized little Valentine was a hit!

Valentine cookies

My little chef and I made miniature sugar cookies, which we then dipped in melted chocolate and sprinkled with pink sugar crystals to make these tasty little treats. Once the chocolate hardened, we bagged them up, 2 to a bag, in the small clear gift bags and then added our own personalized bag tag by folding over top of the bag and attaching with our stapler. (I've made the tags available as a free printable download here, and you can personalize with names and photo.)

Hope you enjoyed your Love day!  I did and I just polished off one of those creamy grapefruit sized cupcakes I mentioned yesterday. Between that and the fact that my family is en route to see me, I'm still feeling the sugar high.

Love Rocks

Today is the day we all steep a little deeper in the hopeless red of romanticism... or at least a day we can be a little extra fun and flirty, while chocolate shaped hearts disappear in our ravenous attempts to eat as much as we can while we're allowed the extra calories.  And though I'm 300 miles from my three favorite valentines, I'm still gonna' spread the crimson on my pout, bat my lashes and let a little extra love seep into the day...

LOVE and some of my chocolate calories in the form of grapefruit sized cupcakes from my Always Valentine, brought in covertly by a friend for us all to share while standing on our feet all day. How sweet is that?!

And when I do see my loves tomorrow? Oh you'd better believe they're all in for some passionate eskimo style nose rubs and hugs that last hours.

I was looking everywhere for a heart shaped rug, and when I couldn't find one I liked, I took an old fluffy Christmas rug and cut it into a heart shape. And the rockstar onesie I made by using rhinestone transfers and a plain old black onesie from Hobby Lobby. The LOVE letters found in the dollar bins at Target. Voila!

Bray gets excited for Aliyah to hold him for all of about twenty seconds, and then she squeezes tighter and he squeals and wiggles away, and I think Aliyah thinks he's playing.  It's adorable. And hilarious.
