Sunday Citar~ Home

It's Sunday again that means it's time for one of my favorite things... Sunday Citar!!
Here's where we all share a quote or two... a favorite, a new find, a laugh inducing or tear inducing quote you love this week. (Citar = to quote in Spanish)

"Homecoming means coming home to what is in your heart."
~Author Unknown

Daddy comes home today.

In fact, at this moment, as I sit cross legged on my bed, straining to see the screen through half-closed eyelids while my littles dream away the moments till they see daddy with each rhythmic breath, he is slowly making his way to us.  And sometime in the morning, could be early, could be late... but while the bright yellow rays steal across the sky chasing away the dark of night until there's no trace left, we'll see each other again.

While he's been gone, I tried to up the ante by scheduling a couple of photoshoots, wrap up a few projects and still wanted him to come home to a clean house where I actually remembered to drag overflowing garbage pails to the curb along with a few other items waiting in our basement after one of our packing binges. I think there's something empowering about taking care of a household without your other half around to pick up the slack. And to one-up myself, doing it better, faster each time? Well, that's just part of the fun. It's part of my DNA.

This week, I carried sleepy little heads to bed later, stayed up longer, woke up earlier, worked harder and played more presently. So with garbage pails now empty... though still sitting at the curb, the house clean, a few more boxes packed, two amazing photoshoots wrapped and happy little babes tucked into their beds after a long day, I'd say Project Daddy Gone was a success.

The past few days have been wet.

But we decided to venture out, pajama clad, into the puddles anyway. Collecting crabapples, throwing them and laughing hysterically.

And then... strange noise comes from camera... and no more focus.

So a change of scenery and change of lens later, we're looking at letter blocks sprawled across the floor between boxes of packed dolls and blankets.

And each and every similar moment this week was just as small and simple, yet just as grand.

The mice, well, you know.

And it's more like stay in pajamas all day while mommy picks up the random crayons floating in a pile of clothes tucked in the corner, search for missing stuffed animals under bedspreads and read their favorite books a few times over.

Wet and Wild... or Something Like That

I hear the sound of tires quietly humming on the seemingly long stretch of road that separates us from our last adventure and our beds cloaked in crisp, clean sheets. The littles have their heads cocked to the side, trying to get comfortable, while their eyelids fight between half-mast and locked down. But I think closed lids are winning out.

It's been another day, filled to the brim, that leaves us happy and satisfied. And somehow I still managed to tape up a few packed boxes, blast through a mountainous pile of laundry, gift us all fresh linens to climb into tonight and cook a fresh dinner with my husband. But more importantly? My girl lavished some love on one of her besties... One that she already knows she's going to miss when we're gone. And us mamas took care of our littlest babes (her three month old wins out as the littlest, and most snuggly, for sure!) while the girls chased each other around the splash pad and rehearsed their favorite dance routines over blue cotton-candy ice cream cones.

And then just as the last dinner dish found it's way into the dishwasher and the last of the crumbs were wiped from the table, we packed into the car and arrived at our favorite aquatic center (home to Brayden's first birthday party) just as the clock reached the kids' bedtime. "Is it going to be dark when we come out?" Aliyah whispered excitedly under her breath.

But the evening hours didn't seem to wane their excitement or their energy.

Though I kept my camera tucked away carefully in the locker room and instead kept my hands full of riding the little slide with my almost toddler and waving at big sister on the big slide, and then switching turns with daddy to laugh my way down the big blue twists behind my girl... I still managed to sneak out my phone for a clip of Aliyah, my four year old, fearlessly taking her turn in the the footsteps of teenagers off the diving board.

And now, to bed, friends. Where rest, and my husband, beckon. I hope you all have a wonderful beginning to your week!

Sunday Citar~ Reaching

It's Sunday again that means it's time for one of my favorite things... Sunday Citar!!
Here's where we all share a quote or two... a favorite, a new find, a laugh inducing or tear inducing quote you love this week. (Citar = to quote in Spanish)

IMG_9408

"It's not only children who grow. Parents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can't tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it, myself."
~Joyce Maynard

IMG_9445
The littlest one there, age 4 while the others start at age 6, and on her tippie-toes to keep up.

The colorful tiki themed room was buzzing with energy while anxious parents hovered their index fingers over the shutter, lenses pointing in every direction, waiting for the opening number.  And after five days of long dance routine practices, memorizing lines for sketches, and creating hats, outfits and staging... the little ones delivered photo moment after photo moment for proud parents letting that shutter release.

I have to admit, I tried to hold back, but I let a few tears release as well.

Smiling at her "happy feet" as she entered stage left with her friends. Watching my girl click those sticks together, off beat, but with a big smile.  Seeing her twirl opposite the rest of her team... but twirl with flair.

This past week, my girl reached.  She reached with all she had.  She wore herself out keeping up with the bigs girls.  And I kind of cry-laughed when she stopped dancing long enough to yawn, or when she's stare off to the right to follow the moves... one half step behind.  But I was so proud, cheeks aching, heart throbbing and so entertained.

IMG_9423
IMG_9473
Baby brother was proud too. Kept pointing and yelling out, "Eee-yah!" (His version of Aliyah.)

She's growing.  She's reaching.  She's aiming for the sun, beyond anything she's done before, and baby girl is making it.

IMG_9475

We laughed, we cried, we cheered and applauded, and at the end? Daddy brought his girl some flowers.  Her first red roses, just for her, ever.

IMG_9493

I couldn't have been more proud.

A Bottle of Unwind

The soothing tangerine color jumped off the shelf at me. Or maybe it was the word scrolled across the length of the cylinder that read "unwind" that caught my attention. As I weaved my way through the aisles of the grocery store, skipping past the jars of sauces and canned soups, blinking at the teas and coffees, chasing a sly little toddler around as he tried to hide behind mid-aisle shelves... This word had me mesmerized. I looked around to see who was watching, just like I do every month when I slip a box of "women's best friend" into my basket (And I'll never know why I still hide it... Every time.) and coyly placed a can under the container of banana-mango flavored puffs. Okay, two cans.

Obviously I need to relax and I'm ashamed to admit it. Or at least I was.

I found myself trying to multitask while steeping in a lavender bath meant to relax me. I had a book next to me meant to stir creativity, a face mask and cleansing drink, scrubs, my phone... In case I thought of something spectacular or just needed to send a quick email because I forgot to earlier, and I was sorting my kids toys left in the tub from the night before. It was time for an intervention. So I intervened on myself.

And okay, as I pecked that last line into my phone's keypad, I heard an all too familiar "ding!" and switched over to check my email. Seriously. I'm slapping myself for you.

There are times that I feel energized, empowered even, by this life is happening, let's do it all parade that seems to blast through my home.  We want to move? Plan a community-wide event? Throw an all-out birthday/going away party? Make the most out of this summer, swimming, playing, picnicking, visiting? Why yes! And maybe we can do it all at once, like the guy that spins about fifty balls on his body at the same time and makes mamas feel guilty.  Remember that guy?

And while I love the adrenaline that comes with schedules that have to be managed, remembering five things at once and laughing about the one that was forgotten, and carrying sleepy babes to their bed after a long day has them worn and cuddly... I'm also tired.

But I know the see-saw must shift and bring with it a day where rainy skies and cleared schedules make way for burrowing deeper into our blankets and yielding to a sweet calm as we crowd our bodies close and DO LESS.  And I don't think those days can be so fulfilling, so precious, without the days of chaos.  It's hard to fully appreciate a day of rest until you've had days where rest is far from sight.

aliyah in the pool
A little moment shared at the pool tonight with friends.

Until that day arrives, I'm learning a few things along the way...

Say YES to the right things.
Which coincidentally means saying NO to the things that sap energy and time without making a sufficient deposit into our "Happiness" accounts.  What makes you happy? What makes you thrive?

And guys, I actually had to question blogging... But blogging makes me happy.  It's reignited a passion for writing.  It's given volume to a voice that was inside me.  It inspires me to look at life in a different way and enjoy the small, beautiful things.   I built relationships with women I've never even met.  And at times where I've felt alone, or that I could be the only one... a little comment would make it's way through that said just the right thing.

Just like many of you.

And for that I say, thank you.

Take time for yourself.
I find myself stealing away moments.  Moments of quiet.  Moments to close my eyes.  Moments to silence the deadlines and let myself dream.  Amid the rough-around-the-edges kind of days and running-around-in-circles moments, just a few minutes to regroup keeps the mantra of DO MORE alive and going.

Do one thing, and do it well.
Typing away on the keyboard while dear husband is trying to tell a story and Hell's Kitchen plays in the background? Guilty... as we speak.  Talking on the phone while your daughter tries to explain her drawing to you?  Been there.  It always ends in an epic fail, with all parties feeling slighted and mama swims in the guilt.  So I'm putting a hold on the multitasking so I can fully engage and enjoy what I'm doing when I'm doing it.  And consequently?  More seems to be accomplished and I notice the beauty in the little moments I might have missed... when I remember to do it.

So maybe I don't need that little bottle of "unwind" as much as I thought.

What about you, how do you find time to manage it all?

A Morning First

in the light of the morning

She whispered in the dark of the early morning, before the sun's warmth bathed the windows, "Mommy, remember what today is?"  I could hear the excitement in her voice even before I squinted my eyes open.  She was smiling. Waiting.

Today was the first day of a week long arts day camp.  I don't think she fully knew what to expect. In fact, I know she didn't.  For a few days she'd ask if they were going to tell camp stories, and then I realized she was thinking of camp as being a "camping trip" with stories told 'round a crackling fire.  Once she learned it wasn't a camping trip, she'd ask if it was like prison, with chains like in a dungeon.

Seriously, where does this stuff come from?  No more princess movies for awhile.

She's since returned from her first day of camp, smiling from twirling in practice for their dance recital on Friday night, damp suit and towel in her bag after splashing in the sun and very happy to confirm that there were NO CHAINS.

All I heard?  My little girl is excited to be at camp and I think that means I'm old.

Britt + Tim:: A Classic Summer Wedding

The buzz of the day started early.  Girls playing with makeup and laughing to stories being told, old and new.  It seemed more like the start of a fun girls night out, except for a room of guys a few miles away.  Guys that grew up together and were now getting ready to witness their friend following his dreams... and his heart, right into the arms of the girl he loves.  And that's just what they did, spent the day wrapped in each other's arms.

Britt and Tim, you are both beautiful people, and seeing the first day of your lives together through my lens was a privilege.  I wish you a life together full of happiness and joy!
