Hump Day Dump

I've just tucked two little sleep ready babies into awaiting sheets, the scent of sun screen still lingering on their soft, lightly sun-kissed skin. We dove head first into a couple of days enjoying plenty of what our new home state has to offer us. And now? I'm ready to dive head first into my own awaiting sheets and fluffy pillow. Happy Hump Day lovies!

Reaching for the moon... and Sunday Citar

I've set out to write this post a couple of times over the course of last night... and then again today, and each time I've felt uninspired. Called away from the luminant frame of my screen by a little girl caught up in an imaginary tale of princesses and towers on her bed during rest time or by her baby brother's request for "hold you, mommy?" or "wets pway weggos!" (I'll let you figure out that second one. Did you re-read it? Yep, there you go.)

I think it's been a good trade.

After a couple of days of blowing my way through too many boxes of tissue, impromptu hey-let's go-see-a-movie dates, one with my bestie and one with my man, walks on the beach and catching up on household duties, bases are frickin' loaded. It's been a busy week and we've been swinging away, making memories while balancing the load of, well, everything else. And even with an entire head that feels stuffed up, it's been good.

"Don't tell me the sky's the limit when I know there are footprints on the moon."
~Paul Brandt

There are times when the list of Too Much To Do seems overwhelming, but usually, tell me there's not time and I'll shoot for the moon anyway. I may be a timid ball player in real life (or to be completely honest, a non-ball player in real life), but metaphorically... having fun with my kids, soaking in life and breathing in all I can? I'm a heavy hitter.

With that, some things we've been enjoying lately... what we've been swinging at.

Enjoying sunset on the beach.
The night I returned home from my trip to the windy, chilly city of Chicago we piled into the car and high-tailed it to the beach, making it with about 30 minutes to spare before sunset, and the sky delivered a magnificent, applause-receiving  show beginning with it's bright white cotton clouds against a cerulean sky and quickly progressing to shades of my favorite crayons, like Outrageous Orange, Scarlet and Sunset Orange. Touche, Crayola, touche.
Beach

As Brayden stepped off that last plank of wood and his toddler toes began to sink in sugar soft sand, he ran the wide open space with us all following. I laughed as he squealed, "Sand! Sand! Water!" It was the perfect welcome home. Hello, beach. I've missed you too.

A swing, and a hit.

Pre-sunset frolic.
And what good is the perfect glow of a sinking sun as the warm waters of the gulf crest the sand without a water splashing escapade or two. Or three.

I picked, you picked, we all picked oranges!
Okay, I forgot to give a forewarning for the cheese that might ooze from this post. But alas it's already poured out it's golden glow onto this page. Or is it the golden glow of the oranges? Either way, we've been in Florida for about six months now and since the move I've wanted to visit an orange grove. I've driven past them, looked them up, tried to find the best one... and finally, decided to just do it. So we packed up the kids and took a drive. The verdict? It's magical, a warm weather juxtaposition the the apple orchards that we would frequent as soon as fall's chill would begin to cool the Michigan air. And just as different as oranges and apples are, that welcoming hallway to walk between the trees and breathe in natures crescendo as you find the perfect tree, well, that's just the same.

Orange Grove

Though, when we started out, the only oranges left were high up in the trees, so we improvised and made it work. Well, I made Chris work.

Oh! And on the way, we swung in next to Mickey and picked up some friends visiting from Michigan... on their honeymoon of all things! Remember Micah and Emily?

But as we ventured further down the grass floor of the grove's own hallways, the greenery grew more lush and full, the oranges abundant.

Little man has been a bit clingy since I've been back, and I'll happily indulge.

I wasn't sure how the day would turn out, the sky was flat and gray and gave the allure of impending showers, but I love giving my kids the experience of plucking fresh produce from their source, to see where the foods we eat are grown and how they come... not from a big box store, but in their truest form, in nature. And it felt good to be out there, with my little ones, seeing, growing, learning, doing... together. That and running for the country store once the sprinkles began to fall from the shaded heavens.

The animal whisperer scores again!

We're swimming in oranges, so amazing orange recipes are welcome.

Kisses.

His kisses are always abundant, and when he gives one, it's usually followed by, "Nother one?" And then, "nother" and "nother."

Birthdays.
And celebrations of birth, the most deserving of celebrations. Brayden recently turned the big two, and we're planning an upcoming pseudo Birthday party to celebrate with friends. We're swinging again, and going for the home run baby.

Heart is Home

Heart is Home, originally uploaded by Tabitha Blue / Fresh Mommy.

I think there's always been a little part of my heart that is one of a city girl's. A little section carved out in the shape of rising architecture and the grid of bustling streets. I love a brisk walk around the corner to a cute cafe, the energy of lives happening in such close proximity and yet each one still so different. I grow accustomed to the constant stream of car horns and passerby conversation, sirens and construction beeps until it becomes a welcoming white blanket of sound.

And yet yesterday I returned to the place where my heart belongs. It doesn't matter if it's in the middle of Michigan Avenue, Fifth Avenue or along an unknown street near the coast of the gulf... Home is where my family lives. Where my little ones have crawled into the warmth of my heart, and it's there we'll all stay.

Welcome to Sunday Citar!! Here's where we all share a quote... a favorite, a new find, a laugh inducing or tear inducing quote you love this week. (Citar = to quote in Spanish)

Close to my heart

I am your parent, you are my child.
I am your quiet place, you are my wild.
I am your calm face, you are my giggle.
I am your wait, you are my wiggle.
I am your dinner, you are my chocolate cake.
I am your bedtime, you are my wide awake.
I am you lullaby, you are my peek a boo.
I am your good night kiss, you are my I love you.
~Maryann K. Cusimano

Today I'm keeping all of my babies close to my heart by letting their names hover there... even our little pearl who never made it into the warmth of our arms.

"Mommy, is this so that you never forget us when we're apart?" asks my curious little firstborn. "This one Brayden, this one Eee-yah," quips my littlest. They are my everything, the very strings my heart depends on. They're the never forgotten, golden sunset to my evening sky and glorious sunrise to my every morning.

I would love to have you join the Sunday Citar inspiration and have all of us come to your blog to read what quotes inspire you! Simply link within your post to my blog, and sign up with the linky below, leaving the link directly to your Sunday Citar post. Just click here if any of that sounds confusing, and please take a moment a visit at least three of the participants around you... you'll be glad you did!

The Card

The Card, originally uploaded by Tabitha Blue / Fresh Mommy.
I walked into my hotel room after a long day of work, ready to collapse into my bed. That is after I took a shower and did everything I could NOT to touch the shower curtain, because we all know that would only mean starting over. From scratch.

So, after successfully navigating my way through a maze of linen and plastic... And not touching either, I stepped into the room and a beam of blinking red caught my attention. I had a message. One phone call and a quick delivery later, I was holding one of the sweetest cards. Ever. Well, two if you count the special mix of sweet and sexy words scrolled across another from my husband. But this one... I knew as soon as I tore through the crimson envelope, sealed with no less than 10 good licks, who had done the choosing. The cute-as-a-button little kitten on the front gave it away. Addressing a sweet baby girl as the recipient was my second clue. A card from my precious littles, hand picked out of a sea of hearts and glitter by my firstborn and just for me. Best card ever.

Brayden's 2yr Pics (8 of 8)

As I type, it hurts to write. But it's the good kind. I'm caught up in a swirl of raw emotion of the fact that at this very moment, two years ago, I was in the final stretch of labor and didn't think I could do it. Didn't want to make another push, for fear. Fear of pain, and maybe even a little fear of what was to come.

All I wanted was to hold him and feel his delicate skin touch mine, and through all the beeping and blood-pressure checking, crying, smiling and shaking, hand holding and stalling... it came time for the greatest gift life has to give, the crescendo that is new life. The final push.

Brayden's 2yr Pics (1 of 8)With cheeks stained from tears, I'm transported to that place in time where he made me a mother, again. And for all the times I dreamt of holding my own little ones in my arms, for all the baby names I whispered just to see which ones felt right flowing through my lips... little did I know the effect his two little years and that of his sister's would have. The immeasurable, invaluable joy their presence brought in our home. That just loving them, knowing them, watching them, breathing them would teach me the heart-bursting, fear-quenching, soul-satisfying kind of love.

Brayden's 2yr Pics (4 of 8)

It's a birthday. The beautiful celebration of his birth.

I try and attach words to the beauty, the heaven that is wrapped up in loving a little one and yet, it's something that words cannot attach to, because it really is so much more. And yet, I try.

Loving him, loving them this much, stomach clenching, tears spilling... means living up to everything I hope them to be someday. I couldn't be more honored to have the challenge of teaching them everything there is to know about this big, beautiful, wonderful life.

And yes, maybe that's where it can get a little scary, but watching them soak up life with ferocious and yet precious intensity... every fear, every doubt goes away somehow.

Two years may not seem like a very long time, but it's changed our family forever, for the good.

Happy Birthday, Brayden, my love. Oh, you are loved. Today we celebrate you, little two-year-old.
