Something Greater

Feeding Children Everywhere
"One of the keys to emotional health is to get lost in something greater than yourself." ~Donald Miller

I heard this quote recently and knew. I knew that is exactly what we were doing. I knew that helping others, in any way, is doing something greater than yourself. I knew that serving alongside my children was teaching them the joy of giving, and sharing, and loving.

Along with many other in our area, we packaged 1,850,400 meals for hungry children around the country through Feeding Children Everywhere. And I have to say, people are amazing. People that come together, that give of themselves and of their time, that step up when a need arises, that dive into something that is greater than any one of us... that is amazing. That desire to serve, that need to give is in every one of us. Maybe for some, it's just been lying a bit dormant, maybe that muscle hasn't been used or exercised and so it's been forgotten... but it's there. It just needs a little stretching; a few smiles to someone that's sad, a pay-it-forward in the drive through, a "You're amazing" note left at the gas station for the next customer. There is so much need out there, so many places for us to dive in to the sea of something greater, so many ways so build those life-giving muscles and help someone else.

Let's decide together to get in a little stretching today.

And do you know what else? YOU really are amazing!

Uncharted Territory:: Kindergarten

Kindergarten-10-2

I drove away from her school Monday with my heart in my throat, it's pounding left me breathless as I held back tears. Who knew that mama love would hurt. My heart hurts loving her.

After talking ourselves in circles about this schooling decision, and only making our final decision very recently, I'm happy with where we're at. We've danced around the option of homeschooling, tip toed around different school choices, taken tours, made lists of pros and cons for each and had finally settled on a choice we're all happy with... And just in time for Aliyah to get excited about it! It seems like up until now, decisions for our kids have been fairly easy, with this one big thing looming over our heads. It felt like we had so much time and we talked to so many that offered great advice, that finally, we fell into what we thought would be the best fit for us, for our family, for our little social butterfly.
And the thing is? If we need to change it later we will.

Kindergarten is like taking a pin to that sweet little bubble that's kept our home a nice and comfy cocoon. It's been warm and beautiful, it's been comfortable. And now? She ventures out of that cocoon five days a week, away from my arms and my side and into the influence of others, and hopefully she'll be the influencer for good in the midst of what everyone else is doing and saying. As a mother, every morning leaves me wondering if I've done enough, said enough, hugged enough... and then has me stepping back, cheering from the sidelines and learning new ways to be there for her. My evening hugs will be longer and sweeter, our conversations more intentional, I'll be packing some amazing lunches and choosing outfits we both love. This whole Kindergarten thing is a learning curve for me as well, learning to let go and yet still always there, and she'll know.

She's just starting a new chapter to her own story. One she will write with my attention and applause.

Okay, so this school outfit thing? It is definitely a do-it-together process with my independent girl. She knows what she likes... and mostly, that's comfort. Her closet is stocked with a row of dresses front and center that are her favorites, her most comfortable and twirly little pieces. But the collaboration process has been fun. She likes her hair down, I like it up. She likes dresses, I like leggings. She likes tennis, I like flats... and we work together. A bit of give and take from us both. We're learning. We're growing, together.
  Kindergarten lunch-1
Amazing lunches include some of our reusable favorites, like the WasteNotSak to hold little treats, snacks, napkins and notes, the Orbit band engraved with her name that stays on her water bottle so it doesn't get mixed up... and sandwiches cut into shapes with a cookie cutter (and little notes you can download here) all put together in this stackable Rubbermaid LunchBlox set. One of my favorite things to do is add a couple of frozen strawberries to her water bottle in the morning... not only does it work like ice in keeping her drink cool, it adds subtle flavor and she always drink down her water for the day so she can unscrew the lid and eat the strawberries that have thawed by the end of the day.

There arose a cheer when she picked this totally adorable owl backpack over cartoon characters.

Kindergarten-12
Quintessential girlhood fingers... chipped polish the day after being painted.

It's been an adventurous first week, full of smiles and tears. And I know the adventures are just starting. Write that story, my little butterfly. Write that beautiful, colorful story with your best, most favorite Crayola colors.

Back to School Breakfast

First Day of School Breakfast

There's nothing like riding the excitement of little ones, their contagious animated enthusiasm, all the way to the finish line, celebrating the little things and throwing as many parties as we can along the way.

If it were a horse race, I'd totally be the brightly colored jockey and I'd name my steed Enthusiasm and we'd wave and blow kisses to a cheering crowd as we ride hard until the bell rings.

Kindergarten Breakfast blog-1

And this First Day of School thing? It's got some major wagers on it and I couldn't let the race pass be by without some bunting and flags and fresh baked goodies.

We started out with chocolate chip cookies and presents wrapped up for the new teachers, and then I found some adorable free printables that fit right in for a first day breakfast to match first day fever. The night before kindergarten, when the kids were in bed early with clothes picked out and bags packed, I printed and cut, glued and baked. It didn't take long and their little nook was transformed to a celebratory send off.

Kindergarten Breakfast blog-4 Kindergarten Breakfast blog-5
Little brother decided to take a bite out of the tops of all the muffins.

The muffins were baked and ready the night before so that everything was prepped for morning... I didn't want any early morning set-backs. I almost went with cinnamon apple muffins for even more of a "school" theme, but since that's one of the only flavors Brayden won't eat, I decided to make blueberry. To add some protein, you could also make ahead this easy breakfast casserole and feed the whole family.

I already miss her. It's hard. But I'm making it as exciting as I can, cheering her on, talking about her days, packing some great lunches... and hopefully things like a celebratory breakfast and notes in her lunch box show her I'm still there, and I will always be.

This one still misses his sister though.

The Teacher Gift

I think I'm just going to go ahead and declare this week SCHOOL week, because there is so much to share and I don't think I can get it into one post.

For starters, Aliyah began school this week. Kindergarten to be exact. And though I have so much to say, I'm just riding the emotions of motherly confidence, relief and pride for my girl... and the fact her new sweet teacher declared through an ear to ear grin, "She is awesome!" when I picked her up this afternoon. (I'm ignoring the fact that she probably does that with every student, and taking it at face value, 'cause my girl totally is awesome.)

With the start of any new endeavor, and especially a new person being introduced into our lives that will have such influence in my daughter's life, it's a perfect opportunity for a gift!

Teacher Gift 3-1
I love gifts... Getting them, yes. And giving them, especially.

That's why, in a frenzy of school prep that happened just a week ago I found a few ideas for  teacher gifts.

Then the following happened:

Me, "We have to get a gift together for Aliyah's new teacher. I don't want her to be the only kindergartner without one to give."

Chris, "I didn't know that. Who said that?"

Me, "The Internet."

Yes, Internet, you are now a person... Someone I can blame things on. And though I don't know if all the other kids brought in gifts like I thought would happen, this was something that my sweet girl and I like to do, make others feel special. And her teacher was no exception.

We started with a tumbler my husband picked up and added a few fun items like individual lemonade mixes, a starbucks gift card, a set of markers and some fresh homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Teacher Gift cookie-1

Then we just clipped these fun printables to the cookies and the tumbler.

How cute are they? And so simple too. And of course, you could just use the cookies, always  a great gift, or fill the tumbler with whatever items you want!

I'm sharing the yellow and red printable tags with you today, just click here to download the Cookie printable and click here to download the Thirst printable.

I hope everyone has a fabulous start to the new school year!! I'll be back to share more later.

Quick and Easy Salted Caramel Chocolate Mug Cake

Mug Cake blog-13
I know... what?! That's what I was thinking too when I first saw this recipe over at Babble.

Things like, this looks so good and how can it be that easy and can I really microwave it?

And I'm here to tell you that yes it's SO good, it really is THAT easy and it's totally cooked in a microwave.

Easy. Peasy. And rich, delectable, simple, scrumptious heaven in a mug.

Mug Cake blog-1
I quickly rounded up all of the ingredients, of which I had on hand except for the caramels, but that was remedied during a trek through Target.

Oh and please forgive the fact that I forgot the oil in the photo. If you're gathering ingredients, gather oil as well.

Mug Cake blog-3 Mug Cake blog-4
Of course, cute littles who burnt of quite a bit of energy swimming on one of their last days of summer make up a perfect reason to whip up a few mugs of this chocolatey goodness.

Mug Cake blog-15
Just add, mix, whip, stir, pour and heat.

Mug Cake blog-14
This dessert reminded me of our Pumpkin Spice Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate... easily the best drink I've EVER tasted, and our new Fall tradition. Meaning, I will drink it as much as I can every Fall.

Mug Cake blog-12
I didn't stick exactly to the original recipe... I added more caramel and some lip smacking toppings. I guess I'm a rebel like that.

Are you ready to make one now?

I thought you might be. Enjoy the recipe!

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons all purpose flour
4 tablespoons sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg – beaten
3 tablespoons skim milk
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 caramels
Sea salt

Preparation Instructions:
Mix all ingredients, except for the caramels, in a small bowl (It mixes MUCH better in a bowl than in the mug, I've tried it both ways). Pour mixture into a microwave safe coffee mug. Drop caramels into center of mixture one at a time and add a sprinkling of sea salt to the top. Microwave about 45 seconds. If needed, microwave an additional 15-45 seconds. Top with whipped cream and caramel sauce and another sprinkling of sea salt... or any other toppings you'd like.

Finding Beauty:: Sunday Citar

#PROJECTlipstick

"For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."
~Audrey Hepburn

It hasn't been long since we wrapped up our recent #PROJECTlipstick and I'm still hearing the good that came from it. Yes, prizes were awarded. Yes, we had a lot of fun. But more than any of that was seeing the beauty in each other... in acknowleging it, telling each other, lifting each other up.

As I get older, because yes, no matter how much we try and fight it, it inevitably does happen and I'm learning to embrace it... I'm realizing that there really is beauty all around us. To see it, you just have to look. When I want to find the beauty in the little things... it's right there.

Sunday Citar:: Dance

It's something he's good at, my husband, and that's finding new places to venture to. This time it was the Taco Bus. After hearing about it and researching it's history... literally a taco stand that started in an old school bus, we loaded up a couple of friends and headed into Tampa for the best tacos this side of, well, Mexico.

TacoBus_2012 (3 of 90) TacoBus_2012 (8 of 90) TacoBus_2012 (9 of 90)

If ambiance has anything to do with the taste of a meal, then this place has you transported right past the border noshing on tacos straight from cocina de mamasita.

TacoBus_2012 (2 of 90) TacoBus_2012 (86 of 90) TacoBus_2012 (91) TacoBus_2012 (44 of 90)

And like any good, belly-filling meal that's accompanied my salsa music... it get's eaten quickly, plates are pushed aside and the dancing begins.

It's good to live and let go. To dance with our kids no matter who's there or how many eyes may be watching. To let our hair get messy and our makeup sweaty as we wipe the salty beads from our brow... and not care. To laugh big and dream bigger. To live with passion, whether we're at a Taco Bus or at home, on a stage for many or with an audience of one.

People are watching, our kids are watching. What is our life telling them?

Aliyah wanted to be the videographer and made a "music video" of our moves.
