Honestly

As a parent, and as I'm sure so many others do, I have this habit of so often looking to myself and asking, "Am I doing it right? Are my kids learning enough, growing enough, being exposed to enough to be able to make it successfully in this big, crazy world we live in... and yet, are they protected enough, shielded enough from the bad to not be hurt, to not be scarred by it?"

It's a balance. Just like life and realizing that there is a season for everything. A time for the tide to rise while it's simultaneously preparing to flow back out.

I want my kids to understand the need to be cautious in this world and with the people that they meet, to trust their instincts and their gut, to know that it's okay to say "no" or to stand up for what they believe in or what they know to be right, there is also the other side of it. The ebb to this flow is that I don't want them to be so cautious that they don't treat people kindly, or too scared of life that they don't embrace it and live, really live it to the fullest in on their journey through this world. Balance.

Our family has adopted this same structure as we approach concepts of green and eco-friendly living. Are we a crunchy family? Not so much. Are we doing something? Absolutely. To me, it's still all about that one little word: balance.

I'll never forget the words a wise friend quoted once, a long time ago, while talking about this and other places where we try to strike a balance... between work and family life, "Sometimes it's not a problem we can solve, but a tension we can manage."
Diaper Pics-8
I want to teach my kids, even as I learn myself, how to take care of our world. I want them to be responsible about the choices they make while at the same time not living in anxiety about our future. I want our family to be healthy and to eat, breathe and drink the best, but I don't want to raise a family in fear of what we consume... because fear itself breeds a whole lot of unhealthy in our lives.

That's why my kids wore cloth diapers when younger, that's why we buy organic when we can, that's why we use essential oils to help keep our bodies healthy... and why Brayden runs in asking me to rub it on his feet whenever he finds a bottle of some oil around the house. Simply put, we do what we can, and try not to stress about the rest.

We can't do everything. Sometimes I find myself struggling, with too much pressure on myself to do better, to do more, to somehow reach perfection in raising my children. And the fact is, that will never happen. But I'm walking the tightrope. I'm using the tension like a friggin' balance beam and making the most out of it.

It reminds me of the scared giraffe on one of my kids' favorite new movies, who didn't want to step foot on the tiny little rope, but in the end? Giraffe has some moves and didn't even know he could dance. This mama doesn't have it all figured out, not even close, but I'm learning, I'm taking a step on that line and teetering before I can dance.

Take for instance this balance during the holidays when I just want to ride Santa's sleigh while singing carols and flinging home baked goods to everyone I know, and yet I want my kids to see the importance of giving, that it's not just about what makes us happy, that there's so much more to it than that. We all feel the struggle between the rush of a schedule filled with too much and the hope for a simple Christmas season, and so somewhere in there we look for the balance of it.

It can be a merry little tightrope too.

We take care of ourselves and try to make the world a better, cleaner, healthier place while we're at it. But we don't stress, we can't. No single person, or one family, can save the world. But just like any revolution, like any change in culture, it just starts with one idea. It begins with one step.

Imagine what it would look like if every person decided to take the time to share something they have to give this Christmas season... even if all that they have is themselves and a great smile. If everyone decided to make one healthier choice for their family. If everyone took one small step in the direction of cleaner living. What would the world we live in begin to look like?

One of the ways we're making a stride for the better is with The Honest Company products. We were recently introduced to their fashion forward diapers that don't have any nasty chemicals in them. Brayden loves the fit and feel... and the fun patterns. And even though he's on the verge of potty training, it's a way to go out of diapers in style. We've been using their laundry detergent for awhile now, as well as their bath products on the kids (which smell incredible, by the way), and so diapers were just the next step for us.

What could your next step be this season? We'd love to for you to share!

The Honest Company was started by a mom and a dad who, like many modern parents, were increasingly worried about products made with questionable chemical ingredients. But the alternatives they found were often expensive, inaccessible, bland, or ineffective. In response to this clear need for something better, they created The Honest Company to ensure that parents (or anyone for that matter!) could easily find natural and non-toxic eco-friendly products that are beautiful, effective, and affordable. From customized product bundles to diapers and wipes to an ever-expanding line of cleaning and personal care products, you can find everything you need at Honest.com and have it delivered directly to your front door.

Thankful for Our Day

Our evening is wrapping up with just as much Christmas spirit as it began. I woke, full and content on turkey and thankfulness, and to tunes of A White Christmas on repeat in my head.  Our rifling through boxes that Chris brought in from the attic full of Christmas decor was only on pause for a bit while we ventured out for a tree... on the craziest shopping day of the year. So, by pause for a bit, I mean we didn't actually start until this evening. Still, the day was full of laughter and cheer, and kids enthusiastically setting out each red pillow, or blanket, or Christmas book, or candle they'd pull from the magical boxes.

Grateful and happy.

A little peak at our Thanksgiving...

Loving on cousins and watching the parade, well, sort of.
Thanksgiving-3 Thanksgiving-1

Pre-turkey football.
Thanksgiving-5 Thanksgiving-4

Final prep for the big meal, an amazing time with family... and a nap inducing tradition.

Kids are being tucked in, Christmas movies are playing and cookies are in the oven. Holiday duty calls.

Thankful

“So often we dwell on the things that seem impossible rather than on the things that are possible. So often we are depressed by what remains to be done and forget to be thankful for all that has been done.”
~Marian Wright Edelman
Beach-1
This week has been a lesson in the art of walking the fine line between playing catch up and letting go. Of exhaling and slowing when I can feel it's needed, and rallying to find a quicker pace when the setting calls for it.  Of learning when it's good for our family to say yes, and the times we need to say no.

So as we're settling into this beautiful calm to be content just to be and fully embrace and enjoy this holiday season, we've excitedly said yes to opening our arms, and our home, to family in from Michigan. To walks through the park and the forest to collect pine cones for our fall table decor. To late nights where play and laughter echo into the night hours and sleep spills over a little longer into the morning. To evenings on the beach where the wind is high and my Florida kids stay wrapped in extra sweatshirts and towels while they're northern relatives explore the coastline.
Beach-7 Beach-9 Beach-8
And no? That's entered our vocabulary a little bit more lately as well... when I can tell it's the best thing for my family at the moment.

A little extra turkey and stuffing tomorrow? A definite yes. An extra slice of pie? That'll be a no, at least that will be my first answer.
Beach-4
As the sun sets on this day and rises on the next, I'm grateful for a house full of sleeping cousins that will wake up with smiles ready for another day of lovin' on each other. I'm so thankful for life and love, for friendship and community... and I'm thankful for you.

Napkins are folded and waiting in their place, the counters are full with food ready to make the house smell delicious as it cooks and serving dishes are awaiting their purpose. We are ready. Ready to live and love some more and dive deep into the waters of thankfulness.

Friends, enjoy your tomorrow, dwell on the beauty of possibility.

Sunday Citar:: Apart

Note
"Love is missing someone whenever you are apart but somehow feeling warm inside because you are close in heart."

My phone vibrated with the notification of a text and I read the words... She is staring at her phone, looking at a picture of you and crying.

It's been thirteen days since I've been in my own home, in my own bed, and it's notes like these that help. Notes and chocolate. Calls to talk just with her when she's missing me too much. Computer chats and little visits to see me in between.

And home? Home is good. I will be arriving to a full house of family in town and a week of Thanksgiving planning and festivities, beach sunsets and acorn collecting jaunts though our forests. The menu planning has already begun (I'll be sharing some favorites soon if you're working on your menu as last minute as I am), and I'm ready for a Holiday explosion to happen in our house.

Have a beautiful Sunday, friends, wherever your path today may take you... whether close to home or far from it.

Miami

Usually I have a slew of photos crowding my phone that I reminisce through as I dump them into Wednesday's usual Hump Day Dump post... but this past week has been full of meetings and deadlines and long hours. And with little photos to show for it. But yesterday was the first time that I really was able to take some time and enjoy our beautiful surroundings like the beach behind my hotel and an afternoon nap in the sun.

A New Light and Miami Love

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller

photo.JPG

I've been traveling a lot this past week and a half, and though the travel itself isn't a new thing or more than I've been used to in the past, I feel like I'm living one of those moments in life where the balls are spinning and I'm running out of hands, or feet, or elbows to hold them up. Thus, the lack of time spent here, in this precious space of mine with you beautiful friends. I've so missed our coffee dates and happy conversations. And speaking of coffee, I have to admit, I'm usually WAY more of a soy chai tea latte fan than coffee, but with this schedule I've adopted recently I've fallen head over heals in love with a good cup of Cuban cafe con leche. I know it's a Miami thing right now, but I'm determined to figure out how to make it work at home as well. Delicious.

Miami
Photos in this post were taken with my phone and shared this week on Instagram, a free phone app. You can find me on IG as TabithaBlue.

Many people close to me lately, and by lately I mean this past week, have experienced the amazing feat of facing fear at it's most intense game of life or death, with the cumulative effect of seeing life in a new light and reevaluating circumstances. These are their stories and not something I can share openly here, but I have to say, just reliving the events through their eyes and words has me looking at my own life and has given all of us a new way of seeing things. Sometimes when a could-be tragic situation leaves you grateful for another morning or the next breath, things like massive plane mechanical failures while in flight and other situations meant only for television shows that I don't even like to watch, it's easy to see things in a different light, to look with new eyes. But, why does it sometimes take a force of nature, or evil, for us to be grateful for the good? For the little things like sharing a slice of pumpkin bread with someone we care for or a tender hug in a deep, comforting embrace. Why do tragic events cause our last few days to play like a movie trailer in our minds as we scroll through quickly, hoping and praying that we left each person that holds a special place in our hearts with a smile or those simple words, "I love you."

Miami

I've become practiced the art of smiling through answers on the Auto Show floor (the reason I'm in Miami at the moment), mostly to wonderfully sweet people, families I've met or genuine good souls... and then other times, it's a smile that carries me through the thought process of what I really want to say and to the answer that leaves my mouth. Though I don't believe there's anything wrong with edited words, and in fact, times where they're necessary, life is too short for edited love.

How do you let others in your life know they're important? What do you do to let the love flow, unedited and graceful, refreshing the very lives of those who are important in your own life? Do tell.

It makes me smile to send texts for no reason other than to express affection and holding that hug for a second longer than expected. I cherish the moments I can tell someone how much they mean to me and want to be the light in someones day making them feel important or special... and I'm determined to find new ways to do just that. Real and unedited ways.
